A seasonal style guide for feeling confident, comfortable, and completely yourself.

One of the most common questions I hear before a photo session is:

“What should we wear?”

And honestly? I love this question - because what you wear plays a big role in how your photos feel. Not in a trendy or restrictive way, but in how confident, comfortable, and present you feel in front of the camera. It also plays an especially big role when you live in a beautiful, four-seaon state such as Washington.

At Gabbie Rose Photo, my goal is always to help turn the best moments into memories - and that starts before we ever click the shutter. This guide is here to help you choose outfits that feel authentic, timeless, and aligned with the season you’re stepping into.

While I’m based in Spokane, Washington (where we experience very distinct seasons), this guide works beautifully for most locations that see seasonal weather changes.

A Few Ground Rules (No Matter the Season)

Before we break things down by month, here are a few principles I swear by:

Choose comfort over perfection.

  • If you’re constantly adjusting, tugging, or feeling restricted, it will show in your photos.

Stick to neutral + earthy tones.

  • Creams, whites, blacks, sage, forest green, browns, denim, and muted pastels photograph beautifully and stand the test of time.

Textures > loud patterns.

  • Think linen, knit, denim, wool, leather, cotton. These add depth without distracting.

Coordinate, don’t match.

  • This is especially important for couples and families. Aim for harmony, not identical outfits.

Dress for movement.

  • Walking, sitting, spinning, leaning - the best photos happen when you’re moving naturally.

How to Dress Based on the Month or Season.

January - February

Winter Layers & Cozy Elegance

Winter sessions can feel incredibly intimate and romantic - especially if you lean into the season instead of fighting it.

What works best:

  • Wool coats, long jackets, or structured outerwear
  • Sweaters, knits, turtlenecks, and thermal layers
  • Boots (ankle or tall), leather or suede
  • Neutral scarves, beanies, or gloves (kept minimal)

Color palette ideas:

Cream, charcoal, black, camel, forest green, deep brown

Pro tip:

Layer intentionally. A great coat can elevate the entire look - and we can always remove it for a few frames if weather allows.

March - April

Early Spring & Transitional Weather

Spring is a season of contrast - chilly mornings, warmer afternoons, and unpredictable weather.

What works best:

  • Light sweaters or cardigans
  • Midi dresses with tights or boots
  • Denim jackets or trench coats
  • Closed-toe shoes or loafers

Color palette ideas:

Soft neutrals, sage green, muted florals, light denim, cream

Pro tip:

Bring one extra layer you love. It gives us flexibility and variety without a full outfit change.

May - June

Fresh, Light, and Playful

Late spring and early summer sessions feel airy, joyful, and full of movement - perfect for seniors, couples, and lifestyle sessions.

What works best:

  • Flowing dresses or skirts
  • Lightweight button-ups or linen shirts
  • Comfortable sandals or clean sneakers
  • Simple jewelry and natural makeup

Color palette ideas:

White, light green, blush, tan, soft blue, subtle floral tones

Pro tip:

If you’re worried about wind, choose fabrics that move with you - flowy looks photograph beautifully in motion.

July - August

Warm Summer Evenings & Golden Light

Summer sessions often happen during golden hour, when the light is soft and warm.

What works best:

  • Breathable fabrics (cotton, linen)
  • Sleeveless or short-sleeve options
  • Light dresses, jumpsuits, or relaxed fits
  • Neutral footwear that won’t steal focus

Color palette ideas:

Cream, warm neutrals, olive, terracotta, soft black

Pro tip:

Avoid heavy patterns and neon tones - they can distract from your face and clash with natural light.

September - October

Fall Texture & Earthy Romance

Fall is hands-down one of the most popular photo seasons - and for good reason.

What works best:

  • Sweaters, cardigans, light jackets
  • Boots, loafers, or structured shoes
  • Layered outfits with texture
  • Long sleeves and cozy fabrics

Color palette ideas:

Sage, rust, mustard, brown, forest green, cream

Pro tip:

Fall layers create visual depth. Don’t be afraid of dimension - this is where outfits really shine.

November - December

Moody, Warm, and Intentional

Late fall and early winter sessions feel cozy, reflective, and intimate - perfect for couples and storytelling-driven portraits.

What works best:

  • Structured coats or jackets
  • Dark denim, wool, knits
  • Boots with clean lines
  • Minimal accessories with intention

Color palette ideas:

Black, deep green, cream, charcoal, espresso brown

Pro tip:

Neutrals photograph beautifully in moody light and create timeless galleries you’ll love for years.

A Note for Couples, Seniors & Branding Clients

No matter who you are or what milestone you’re celebrating your photos should feel like you.

  • Couples: Choose outfits that feel natural together and reflect how you actually spend time.
  • Seniors & Graduates: Pick something that represents this season of life - comfortable, expressive, and true.
  • Branding & Lifestyle Clients: Your outfits should align with your brand colors, personality, and the story you want to tell.

If you ever feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure - that’s what I’m here for (or your photographer if you aren't local). Styling guidance is always part of the experience.

You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe or follow trends to have beautiful photos. The most meaningful images happen when you feel confident, grounded, and seen.

And that’s always the goal; creating a space where you feel comfortable being exactly who you are, while we capture moments you’ll want to return to again and again.

If you’re booking a session and want help planning: outfits, locations, or vibes; I’d love to walk through it with you.
