A Guide From Your Spokane Senior & Graduate Photographer

Your senior photos should be more than just pretty pictures. They should actually feel like you. Your vibe, your energy, your story. It’s easy to feel like you have to pick the same field or staircase everyone else uses… but honestly, the best sessions are the ones that break the mold a little.

If you’ve ever wondered:

“Where should I take my senior photos?”

“What kind of vibe fits me best?”

“Is it okay to do something totally different?”

The answer is: yes. Let’s talk about it.

Why Your Location Matters

The spot you choose for your senior session sets the tone. It affects the light, the way you dress, how relaxed you feel, and how connected you are to the moment. When you’re in a place that actually means something to you, that energy shows up in your photos.

If your happy place is flipping through records or browsing used books, why not bring that into your session? You deserve photos that feel like home not just a highlight reel of someone else’s ideas.

Mia’s Session: A Real-Life Example

When I photographed Mia’s senior photos, we skipped the usual park or open field initially. Instead, we hit two of her favorite spots: Auntie’s Bookstore and 4,000 Holes Record Store. They’re both full of character, nostalgia and more importantly, they’re the type of places she actually loves spending time.

Because we shot in spaces that already felt like her, the whole session felt natural. No forced smiles, no awkward posing. She could just be. And those are always the best kinds of photos the ones that don’t feel like a performance.

How to Choose a Photo Location That Feels Like You

Here are a few simple ways to figure out a spot that makes your photos feel real and personal:

1. Think about where you actually hang out.

Not where you should go, but where you do go.

  • Where do you feel the most “you”?
  • What kinds of places inspire you or feel comforting?
  • Are you more cozy and calm, or bold and creative?

Examples:

  • Bookstore or library for readers and daydreamers
  • Record shop, vintage store, or thrift mall for indie/alt style
  • Coffee shop, garden, or your favorite trail for chill vibes
  • Rooftop, downtown alley, or parking garage for edgy looks
  • Your own home or backyard for something low-key and intimate

2. Choose meaning over what’s trendy.

Sure, flower fields are cute, but if they’re not your thing, skip them. Your photos will feel so much more timeless when they’re rooted in something real. If you want to do your session at your favorite taco truck or sketchy-cute video store, I’m so here for that.

3. Ask your photographer (hey, that’s me).

If you’re stuck or unsure, I’ll help you figure it out. I love brainstorming location ideas based on your energy, your style, and the story you want your photos to tell. We can get creative and keep it low-pressure.

Senior year is such a wild mix of excitement, nostalgia, change, and “what now?” energy. It deserves to be documented in a way that feels honest and personal, not stiff or overdone. I want your photos to reflect the season you’re in exactly as you are.

So forget about what everyone else is doing. Let’s make something that’s just for you.
